Chronique | Yuden 油田 - Reincarnation

Franck irle 8 juillet 2024

In each of his works, the artist leaves unresolved questions. In principle, creation is the affirmation of an existence that is not fleeting, but in perpetual transmutation. In this case, Yuden's EP is a call to more distant aspirations. Reincarnation is a palingenesis, and although it was released in May 2024, the 5 tracks are like ricochets whose ripples on the surface of the water extend into immensity.

Although I allow myself a session of music listening every night, this privilege still allows me to keep my mind clear and not be overwhelmed by the avalanche of information that the media pours out, in the midst of all this plethoric mess, I find a refuge. My nocturnal excursions are limited to a small space, beyond the geometric figures in which art distinguishes itself from everyday objects. The emblematic failure of many composers testifies to a creativity that is freeing itself from traditional shackles, these discreet heroes who are trying to make music less complex.

Under the name of Yuden (oilfield in Japanese), Yann single-handedly pilots an arsenal of instruments and percussion, in an instrumental apotheosis where minimalist lyrics are hammered out like a mantra. A Light Inside, right down to the last bar, stands out in a totally unexpected concluding phrase. There's no question of mystical syncretism linked to a caravanserai of divinities; "BETWEEN THE SKY AND EARTH I FEEL THE STREAM" reiterates this upward flow that is the blood of the earth to reach the peaks of heaven. In Echoes of the Void, the bass hums and crawls slowly, carried by a carpet of ethnic instruments. To spare you the thought of a guided description, I suggest you listen to The Loop over and over again, whose industrial twist is the driving force behind this EP. Nature is very present, powerful, a theme inspired by initiation books opening the way to another dimension. Reincarnation is the self-denial of a totally autonomous musician whose intention is to dedicate himself not just to music, but to the progressive detachment from earthly possessions. The final track, A Path, is the way forward.
